I highly recommend Hour of Glory (1949).
The film's flawed hero, Sammy Rice (David Farrar), is a bomb disposal expert who often gets drunk to relieve the pain from a leg injury that he sustained in war.
His girlfriend, Susan (Kathleen Byron), struggles to get Sammy to rise above his depression and conquer his drinking problem.
A seventeen-minute scene in which Sammy defuses a bomb is a breathtakingly suspenseful scene.
